CUPE supports 3902 & 3903

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As mentioned in the meeting tonight, CUPE Locals 3902 and 3903 are on strike at UToronto and YorkU. They consist primarily of graduate teaching assistants, undergraduate teaching assistants, and research assistants. The position that they are in is one that we are never that far away from, considering the history of our employer.

Please attend this photo-op, organized by CUPE Local 1393, this FRIDAY at 10:30am in CAW.

See you there!

In solidarity through both thick and thin,

CUPE Local 4580

REMINDER – March 4 is the final meeting of the year

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

If you haven’t already, please mark your calendars for the final meeting of the year: Wednesday March 4 at 6pm, location TBD.

Some reasons you may want to attend:

1. voting of the budget for next year (e.g., scholarship allotments, etc.)

2. swearing in of the new executive (Ashlyne, Robert, Joan, Lisa, and Janer)

3. pizza

I will be contacting you with a location shortly. We look forward to seeing everyone!

In solidarity and on behalf of the executive,

Mia

Election canceled tomorrow!

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

After consulting with CUPE National, we have been assured that CUPE National regulations do not find it necessary to run an election if there is one nominee per position, as they are winners by acclamation. So, the executive has made the decision to act in line with recommendations made by CUPE National. There will be no election tomorrow. (There will be pizza at the next membership meeting on March 4, promise!)

The following positions have been acclaimed as there were the same number of nominees as there are positions:

Trustees: Amanda O’Brien; Evan Gammon; Chris O’Keefe

Membership Officer: Janer Akkas
Secretary: Lisa Plant
Treasurer: Joan Craig
Vice President: Robert Powers
President: Ashlyne O’Neil

Congratulations to the 2015-2016 executive! Their terms begin May 1 2015 and last until April 30 2016. You can watch them get sworn in at the next meeting – I bet none of them will turn red with embarrassment as you watch them make a public pledge.

In solidarity and on behalf of the executive,
Mia Sisic

Trustee positions – consider applying by February 9

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The executive has had a meeting about the potential impact of not electing Trustees as soon as possible (along with the other executives). We have come to the decision that we will open up nominations for the three (3) Trustee positions again, this time via e-mail. If you would like to nominate yourself for the position, please e-mail us (cupe4580@uwindsor.ca) no later than February 9 at 11:59p.m. with a statement of intent (e.g., “I nominate myself for a position of Trustee”).

If you would like more information about the position, you can find it on pages 7 and 8 here.

Thank-you again to all those who showed up in the less-than-stellar weather on Wednesday.

In solidarity and on behalf of the executive,

Mia

P.S. I’m working on a new keyboard, so if there are misplaced commas or spelling issues, I fully blame the novelty of this keyboard.

Voting to take place on February 11 on 856 Sunset Avenue

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
At the membership meeting last night, the nominees for the executive (May 1 2015 – April 30 2016) were announced:
Trustees: no nominees (please contact if interested – we need three)

Membership Officer: Janer Akkas

Secretary: Lisa Plant

Treasurer: Joan Craig

Vice President: Robert Powers

President: Ashlyne O’Neil

As noted in our bylaws, we will be holding an in-person (i.e., not online – sorry, CUPE National rules) election on February 11, 2015 (please mark it in your agendas). The election will be held at our office on 856 Sunset Avenue (it’s right around the train tracks, near Alumni Hall) between 10am and 4pm. Come on over with your Student ID and take a few minutes to vote. If you get lost, you can e-mail us or call us at extension 4580. You should exercise your right to vote. We’re not bribing you or anything, but there might be pizza involved.

In Solidarity,

Mia

Additions to the executive

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

1. We held nominations for the vacant positions in our Local this Wednesday at the membership meeting. All seats were won by acclamation, so there will not be an election on November 12:

Secretary: Lisa Plant

Membership Officer: Joan Craig

Trustees: Behdokht Rekabdar; Michelle Krieger; Akwasi Owusu

Congratulations to all! Thank-you for choosing to dedicate your time to our Local.
Their term starts on November 15, 2014 and ends on April 30, 2015. Ashlyne, Mohammed, and I are looking forward to their start dates!

2. In addition to Robert Powers, we would like to extend a warm welcome to our two new Stewards for FAHSS, Engineering and Science: Janer Akkas and Brayden Labute. You can find their contact information here. If you have any issues with your GA-ships, they are your contact people.

3. Thank-you again to all the members who showed up for our membership meeting this week.
In solidarity and on behalf of the executive,
Mia

Meeting on November 5, 2014

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

1. Please mark your calendars/agendas for our next membership meeting which is set for November 5 at 6pm, in accordance with our bylaws. It will be held in Erie Hall in room 2123. Pizza and pop (and grapefruit juice?) will be served. We will order much more pizza this time around – we learned our lesson from the last meeting. Please bring your student ID! We are not policing the pizza and pop consumption: we need your IDs to check them against the Membership List as only our union members are allowed to attend the meeting.

2. Unfortunately, our Membership Officer, Brent Patrick Taylor has resigned. We thank him for his service these past 6 months. The Membership Officer position is now open for nominations, along with the previously mentioned 3 Trustees positions and 1 Secretary position. Nominations will be held at our next meeting, with an election to follow on November 12. (Nomination forms were emailed to you.)

3. We need stewards from Business, Education, Human Kinetics, and Nursing. Contact us if you’re interested.

4. Our Special Committee on Bylaws is headed by one of our many involved members Robert S. Powers. If you are interested in serving on the committee with Robert, please contact him directly.

I look forward to seeing you all next week.

In solidarity and on behalf of the executive,

Mia

WUFA Update and Elections

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

1. Terrific news this morning: WUFA and the Administration have reached a tentative agreement! It will need to be ratified by WUFA membership and Board of Governors (BOG) before it takes effect.

2. At our membership meeting on Wednesday, we put out a call for officer positions that need to be filled (i.e., 3 Trustees and 1 Secretary). Please see the forms sent earlier today, print and fill them out, and bring to our next membership meeting on November 5 at 6pm. Elections will be held on November 12.

3. We have 2 steward positions total available from FAHSS, English, and Science; 4 positions total available from Business, Education, Human Kinetics, and Nursing. Check out the Bylaws on page 8 for clarification of duties (https://4580.cupe.ca/resources/). This position does not require an application, so feel free to e-mail us if you’re interested. We will let you know our decision at the November membership meeting.

4. If you are interested in either of the proposed committees (Special Committee on Bylaws; Special Committee on 4580 Union Education), please send us an e-mail of interest.

5. Lastly, thank you to all of those who came out to the membership meeting on Wednesday. I know that some of you only found out that day (again, I believe the list we received from HR on Wednesday is nearly complete, but we will keep asking for more updated lists), so it means even more that you cleared your schedule to attend. Our attendance was almost double the attendance at any of last year’s membership meetings, so it is pleasing to see that so many of you are vested in this union’s business. For next month’s meeting, please remember to bring your student ID so that we can check your identification against the membership list we have. And, we will remember to order MORE pizza.

In solidarity and on behalf of the executive,

Mia

Membership meeting

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Our first membership meeting of the year will be on Wednesday, October 1 at 6:00pm. in the Education Building (room 1123).

Please note that this is the first day of the planned WUFA strike, so if there are any questions regarding the effect on us, I encourage you to come.

We look forward to seeing (or meeting) you all!

In solidarity and on behalf of the executive,

Mia
